Skybox card - 1994
This is The Atom card from the DC Master Series set circa 1994, art compliments of Hector Gomez.
It may come as a surprise to some of you, but The Atom didn't make it into that many card sets, so when he does make an appearance, it'd be nice if... yanno, it was a cool card.
I can't say I'm all that in love with this one. Gomez has certainly done far better work.
Ray would appear to be in some device here, and he's awfully shiny. I don't care much for the colors, nor am I particularly fond of his uneven eyes.
But he's on something, right? Awesome!

This piece falls squarely into the "okay" catagory. I think a big problem is his clearly aggitated expression. Even when Gil Kane took Ray into Burroughs territory, his more savage leanings were tempered by a nobility and clear intellect lacking in Gomez's piece.
Also, what the hell is wrong with his eyes? If this card had come out today, there'd be cries against the equally inappropriate "Yellow Peril" take on Ryan Choi. But on the bright side, for all its faults, this card can still wipe its backside with the Martian Manhunter art from this set. In fact, that card makes it look like J'Onn was preparing to enter (or perhaps just exited) a very inappropriate and offensive space-orifice of some kind...
the set-up is clever...Bill Gates hires the Atom to fix problems with Windows Vista!
